Embracing My Roots: A Journey to Oregon’s Wine Country

By Liz Ahearn | April 30, 2024

As we step into May, which is also Oregon Wine Month, I’m filled with a sense of pride and nostalgia. I was born and raised in Oregon, a place not just of stunning landscapes but of profound experiences that have shaped who I am today. This month, I want to share a part of my story, the connection I have with Oregon, and why I am so excited to bring Picnic Travel to this special place in August.

Oregon is a land of rugged grace and boundless possibility. Growing up here, I learned that the spirit of the place you’re from stays with you no matter where you go. It’s in the coastal ranges, the high deserts, and the wide valleys of Oregon where I first discovered the power of nature and the deeper sense of purpose it instills. “When people ask why grow grapes and produce wine in Oregon, we glance around at the land, the vineyards, the cellars, and we say: Because look at it.” This quote captures the essence of Oregon’s wine—sourced from the power and purpose of the place, from risk and resilience, and rewarded with expressions found in each glass.

This August, I invite you to join me on a special journey back to my roots. We’ll explore the heart of Oregon’s wine country during the most expressive season. Our itinerary, nearly finalized, includes visits to esteemed wineries where the landscape is as compelling as the wines themselves. We’ll start in Portland for a gathering night, surrounded by the vibrant food scene, and then move to the heart of the Willamette Valley. Each stop—Brooks Winery, Left Coast Estate, Lemelson Vineyards, and Et Fille Wines—will offer a unique narrative, from sustainable, organic farming practices to personal stories of family and heritage that resonate with my own.

Here’s what makes this trip even more special—I’m sharing this experience at the cost of $1,800, focusing on making these moments accessible rather than profitable. It’s a chance for us to enjoy and learn together, without the pressure of a typical commercial tour. With only 3 spots left, this intimate group will ensure a personal and profound experience.

Reflecting on my life’s timeline, from my childhood in an old farmhouse to becoming part of the Chicago community where Picnic was born, each chapter has been about building connections and embracing new adventures. This journey to Oregon is not just a travel plan; it’s a passage back to my beginnings, an opportunity to share the profound beauty and stories of my home state.

As we celebrate Oregon Wine Month, let’s prepare to explore together, to discover the wines, the people, and the landscapes that are not only quintessentially Oregonian but also universally inspiring. Whether you are a wine enthusiast, a lover of nature, or simply someone in search of a journey that promises both relaxation and revelation, I look forward to sharing this adventure with you.

To those who have already expressed interest—thank you. Your enthusiasm for this new chapter of Picnic Wine means the world to me. For those still deciding, I invite you to reach out, ask more, and hopefully, join us as we make our way through the vineyards of Oregon this coming August. Let’s raise a glass to the adventures that await!
