Women’s History Month: A Celebration, A Stand, and A Call to Keep Moving Forward
By Liz Ahearn | March 1, 2025
March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the progress we’ve made, the women who have paved the way, and the undeniable power of our voices. But it’s also a time to acknowledge the fight that still exists—to ensure we don’t move backward.
Why This Matters to Me
As a single mother navigating the corporate world, I have lived the reality of being underestimated in industries that were never built for women. Finance, construction, heavy equipment—places where I was often the only woman in the room. I have been called “sweetheart” in board meetings, seen my competence questioned, and been labeled “too direct” simply for speaking with the same confidence as my male counterparts.
And yet, these are minor compared to the deeper realities of being a woman in this world.
I have been placed in compromising situations where my safety and dignity were at risk. I’ve had to choose between my autonomy and my security, whether in the workplace, social settings, or personal relationships.
But here’s what I’ve learned: There is power in being underestimated. The world has taught women to shrink themselves, but when we refuse to play small, we shift the narrative. I found strength in those challenges, but women shouldn’t have to “overcome” to be seen.
How Far We’ve Come—And What’s At Stake
It wasn’t that long ago—1974, to be exact—when women needed a husband’s signature to open a bank account. 1988 before we could take out a business loan without a male co-signer. 2021 before we saw federal protections against sex and gender discrimination in education and employment.
But progress is fragile. Right now, we are witnessing the dismantling of DEI initiatives, attacks on reproductive rights, legislation making it harder to vote, and, most significantly, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is still unratified 100 years after it was first proposed.
Women’s rights are not guaranteed. If history has taught us anything, it’s that rights that are not actively protected can be taken away.
How We Keep Moving Forward
This is not just about women fighting for women. It’s about men standing beside us. It’s about allies using their voices. It’s about us supporting each other—not competing with each other.
Here’s how we do that:
🌟 Women supporting women. Champion each other, advocate for pay equity, mentor, and amplify one another’s successes.
🌟 Men supporting women. Speak up when you see inequity. Advocate for your female colleagues. Your voice in the room can change the outcome.
🌟 Sharing our stories. Because when we tell the truth about our experiences, we build understanding, connection, and change.
🌟 Staying hopeful. Yes, the world is heavy. But we don’t have to carry the weight alone. We fight for what we believe in, but we also celebrate how far we’ve come. We find joy in the progress, in the women beside us, and in the change we know is possible.
Let’s celebrate this month not just with recognition, but with action. 💜
